At that time, the pen tool felt really elegant, but I didn’t grasp the larger implications of a web-based design tool. Fast forward a decade, and Figma has transformed into a critical part of our design process.

Definitely. For instance, features like Auto Layout and Smart Components encourage designers to think like engineers. Instead of exploring creative options freely, designers get locked into a specific structure too early in the process.

That sounds limiting! Can you give an example of how Auto Layout might restrict a designer’s creativity?

Expert

Sure! Auto Layout is designed to help manage layout dynamically, but it often leads teams to create full-page designs right from the start. This can result in a rigid design where elements snap into place, preventing spontaneous changes or the exploration of unique layouts. It’s like trying to paint a masterpiece with only a few colors.
