So, to start off, could you explain what you mean by bots and scrapers? Because I think a lot of listeners might not be familiar with these terms.

Expert

Absolutely! Bots are automated programs that perform tasks on the internet, and scrapers are a specific type of bot that collects data from websites. For example, when you search for something on Google, their bots are crawling the web to gather information, but not all bots are benign. Some are designed to extract data for malicious purposes.

That sounds like a huge challenge. What made you realize that most of your website traffic was actually from bots?

Expert

Great question! I started noticing that despite serving millions of pages, my visitor stats showed only a few thousand human page views. For every human page load, I was getting about 214 bot page loads. It was shocking!

Wow, 214 bot page loads for every human! Can you break that down a bit more?

Expert

Sure! So, in one week, my server answered about 2.5 million requests but only recorded around 5,977 actual human page views. It highlighted just how much bot traffic was hitting my site, and it made me realize that relying solely on visitor stats from tools like Google Analytics can be misleading.

That’s such an eye-opener. So what steps did you take to combat this bot invasion?

Expert

Initially, I started by blocking known SEO crawlers through something called robots.txt, which tells bots what they can and can't access. But then I moved on to implementing security rules at the Cloudflare level, which was really just scratching the surface.

Host

So, blocking these bots is like setting up a fence around your yard?

Expert

Exactly! But imagine if that fence had holes in it, and tons of sneaky creatures managed to get through. That's what was happening with my initial attempts. It took a lot of trial and error to find effective strategies.

You mentioned an incident where your site received a staggering 3.6 million requests in just one day from China. What was that like?

Expert

It was overwhelming! The requests were coming from over 361,000 unique IP addresses, nearly all of them located in China. I had to implement a China-wide block just to manage the traffic. It felt like trying to hold back a flood with a bucket!

That’s intense! So, what would you say is working for you now in terms of fighting off these bots?

Expert

I've found that using Cloudflare’s Managed Challenge, which is an invisible CAPTCHA, has been a game changer. It helps filter out a significant amount of bot traffic before it even reaches my server.

Expert

Just keep an eye on your traffic stats and don’t be afraid to dig deeper into your analytics. Awareness is key! Also, don’t hesitate to block bots that are unnecessary or harmful.
